On November 25th, 2018, at the An Bang Island Clinic (Spratly Islands), a patient needed emergency medical treatment due to appendicitis. This is a difficult, complex operation that requires professional support from the mainland. But the island is too far away, located 300 nautical miles from the mainland, Military Hospital 4 in Nghe An used Newtel’s Telemedicine system to conduct a remote operation.
Doctors at An Bang Island performed surgery
Doctors at the Military Hospital 4 watched and directed the operation through the screen
The surgery video from Telemedicine system with high quality helped doctors easily monitor and direct the method as well as surgical technique.
This is also the first time they perform surgery with this new technology.
After more than 1 hour of emergency, the operation was successful.
Colonel Nguyen Trung Kien – Director of Military Hospital 4 said that in the past when telemedicine was not available, problems of information exchange, image transmission and professional direction were met with many difficulties. Since using Telemedicine system, the professional direction, especially on An Bang Island has been very good and convenient. It must be said that visual direction, as well as verbal communication, is very clear, favorable for both parties.
